D.J.'s mouth twitched at his answer, but her father had no sense of humor so she didn't bother to laugh at the pun. No matter how she tried to explain it, he'd never find the humor. "I hate to admit it, but I can't depend on the Lakeview PD. There's a leak there. Like I said, after I called in to Captain Miller, four guys showed up at the hotel we were staying at and tried to kill us."
"What about Lou?"
D.J. flinched. She hated thisshe who had always been able to rely on her connections at the police department, especially Lou, could no longer trust anyone. "No. Don't call him. I only want you to know where we are. I don't trust anyone anymore. Can you try to find out what's going on? Run a check on McCall. There's got to be something in his past causing all this hassle. You can call me at this number." She picked up the card Dan had left with them and recited the number over the phone.
"Got it. Anything else?"
"Nope. Just don't tell anyone where I am. No one."
"Rich has been looking for you."
D.J. sighed. She should have known her ex wouldn't let up on his demands for money. She could never understand why one week he had money to burn and the next he was tapped out. All of the cops and all of their friends frequented his storeEd had seen to that. But Rich always seemed to be on the hunt for more money.
